Makoa Guide: The Hook That Decides Fights
Makoa, The Ancient — the tortoise guardian of Turtle Cove, home of the Ska’drin, armed with a salvaged ship cannon and an anchor taken from Dredge’s own ship. In the lore, the developers once suggested he may be the most powerful being in the Realm. In a match, he is the tank whose anchor decides fights: Dredge Anchor hooks an enemy from 75 units, stuns them and drops them at your feet.
He was not always this strong. In 2024 the developers called him “consistently in the bottom 3 in terms of winrate” among Frontlines, then rebuilt him in three steps: a bigger, tougher Ancient Rage in 7.4, buffs to most of his cards in 7.5, and in the final balance patch, 8.1 (January 2025), a 4500-health Shell Shield and a reworked Leviathan. Guides and videos from before autumn 2024 describe a different Makoa.
And the ranked data holds a familiar surprise. In archived PaladinsGuru stats from 2025, the two most-played Makoa loadouts are exactly the game’s own Half Shell and Leviathan presets — and both win 47–50% of their matches. The anchor build that wins 56–64% in every snapshot is played about a third as often. His collection includes Volcanic Makoa, one of the rarest Limited skins in the game.
A salvaged ship cannon that lobs one cannonball per second — 575 damage, fully effective to 75 units. The shots are slow (projectile speed 250) and drop steeply, so the cannon rewards targets that are standing still — like the one you just pulled to your feet.
Hurl the anchor; if it lands, the enemy takes 100 damage, is Stunned and reeled in to drop right in front of you. It cannot pull through walls, and an enemy shield eats it — the throw ends and the full cooldown starts. It does pass straight through Androxus’s Reversal and Terminus’s Power Siphon, but not Zhin’s Counter.
Channel a sphere of shell around yourself that absorbs up to 4500 damage for 5 seconds — raised from 4000 in the final 8.1 patch. You cannot shoot while holding it, you can cancel it early, and the cooldown only starts once it breaks or expires.
Retreat into your shell and spin forward through enemies: 500 damage and a Knockback to everyone you hit, while you ignore knockbacks yourself. It works under Shell Shield and during Ancient Rage — your way in, your way out, and the knockback that peels a diver off your backline.
Drop the cannon and swing the anchor for 8 seconds: 600 damage every 0.8s to everyone in front of you, 5500 extra maximum health, a full heal on activation, 25% movement speed and immunity to crowd control. When it ends you return to the health you had before — it is a window, not a heal. Buffed in patch 7.4 (August 2024) from 4000 health and 525 per swing.
+25% ultimate charge rate and +500 health. Ancient Rage now makes Makoa 50% larger, raises its speed bonus to 45% and resets the cooldowns of all three abilities — Shell Shield was added to the reset in the final 8.1 patch. The least-picked talent (18–19%) and the best-performing one in every archived snapshot, climbing from 51.3% to 54.0% through 2025.
The best Makoa loadout in the archive: 61.5%, 63.6% and 56.3% across the three 2025 snapshots (about 880 matches) and 59.3% on 627 matches in December 2024. Since patch 7.5, Harden triggers when you throw the anchor, hit or miss — a quarter off every hit you take for 4 seconds, every 11 seconds. Skip the in-game Leviathan preset: built on Rampage and Surf, it wins 47–50.5%.
- Spend before you ult: throw the anchor and spin first, then press Ancient Rage — the reset hands all three abilities straight back.
- Treat Ancient Rage as an 8-second window, not a heal. You drop back to the health you had when it ends, so open fights with it instead of saving it for the last 500 HP.
- You are 50% bigger and, since 8.1, headshots land in full during the ult. Dive with 45% speed into a target your team can reach — not alone into their backline.
- Charge is half the talent: Ancient Rage fills 25% faster, and Morale Boost stacks on top of it.
For 4 seconds after Dredge Anchor lands, your next cannonball against that enemy deals 75% more damage — about 1000 from a single shot, 1100 with the anchor itself. The default and most-picked talent (56–57%) at a steady 51–52% winrate: the hook-and-shoot combo every Makoa learns first.
An anchor build that won 55.5% (218 matches, March 2025) and 54.1% (403, December 2024). Salvage matters more than its single point suggests: the anchor reloads a cannonball, so the Pluck shot is always ready. In May 2025, the same core with Determination 5 and Surf 3 in place of Harden posted 61.1% on 234 matches.
- Anchor, then shoot immediately: the target lands in front of you stunned, so the slow cannonball cannot miss. The bonus expires after 4 seconds or on the first shot.
- Pick targets without an escape — Maeve after Pounce, Androxus after Nether Step, Tyra and Viktor, who have little to escape with.
- Throw around shields, not into them: an enemy shield ends the throw and burns the full cooldown.
- Fight near ledges: Shell Spin’s knockback and a well-timed anchor can end a duel without a single cannonball.
Shell Shield is placed on the ground instead of channeled around you, lasts 2 seconds longer and — since the final 8.1 patch — has 500 extra health: 5000 for 7 seconds on a 12-second cooldown. You can shoot while it stands, but you cannot cancel it. Picked about 24% of the time at 50.9–51.9%.
The game’s own Half Shell preset — and the most-played Makoa loadout in the archive, 900–1,100 matches per 2025 snapshot at 47.4–50.0%: a coin flip, not a trap. It turns the shield into a 5800-health wall for almost 9 seconds. Worth knowing: none of the builds that outperform it spend a single point on Shell Shield cards.
- Place the shell for your team, not for yourself: it stays where you put it, so plant it on the point and fight beside it.
- Shoot through the fight — unlike the default shield, Half Shell is not a channel, so your cannon never stops.
- Commit when you place it: it cannot be cancelled, and the cooldown only starts once it breaks or expires.
- Drop it before Ancient Rage — a shell already on the ground stays up while you swing.
Makoa lives on a single throw. Stay outside 75 units, bait the anchor into a shield or an illusion, and he spends the next 11–14 seconds as a slow cannon with a very large hitbox. His Shell Shield is a sphere, not a wall — walk inside it to finish him. And never burst into Ancient Rage: it is immune to crowd control, and after 8 seconds he drops back to the health he had. // COMMUNITY RESOURCES
Is Makoa good in 2026?
S-tier, score 0.88 in our community-consensus tier list — behind only Azaan and level with Fernando, with both PaladinsGuru lists grading him SS and only one source below S (a 0.40 spread). He is a frequent ban in ranked lobbies, yet he does not make the top 20 of our pick-rate proxy: strong, feared, and played far less than Khan or Azaan.
The talent table is close, but it has a clear leader. All three talents win 51–54%; Leviathan leads in every archived snapshot, climbing from 51.3% to 54.0% through 2025 after patch 8.1 moved Ancient Rage’s 50% growth into it and added Shell Shield to its cooldown reset — while only 18–19% of Makoa players pick it.
How do you counter Makoa?
Make him miss. Makoa’s whole turn is one throw on a 14-second cooldown (11 with Strongarm): an enemy shield eats the anchor outright, an illusion wastes it, and outside 75 units it never arrives. That is why Bomb King is his hardest counter by community vote (+130, four voters in five) — sticky bombs shred Shell Shield from a distance the anchor never reaches. Ying (+74) and Drogoz (+75) follow; Inara (+49) can drop Impasse between the anchor and its target.
Respect the ultimate, then punish the end of it. Ancient Rage is immune to crowd control and adds 5500 health for 8 seconds — spend that time out of reach, not trading into it. When it ends, he drops back to the health he had before; since patch 8.1 the ult no longer protects him from headshots, and on Leviathan he is 50% bigger. His Shell Shield is a sphere, not a wall: walk inside it and finish him.
FAQ
What is the best Makoa talent?
Leviathan — the highest winrate of his three talents in every archived PaladinsGuru snapshot, 51.3–54.0% through 2025, on only 18–19% of picks. Since the final 8.1 patch, Ancient Rage with Leviathan resets all three cooldowns, grows Makoa by 50% and raises its speed bonus to 45%. Pluck and Half Shell trail close behind at 51–52%.
What is the best Makoa loadout?
Harden 5, Strongarm 5, Surf 3, Ebb and Flow 1 and Salvage 1 — 56–64% in every 2025 snapshot and 59% on 627 matches in December 2024. The two most-played loadouts are the in-game Half Shell and Leviathan presets, and both win only 47–50% of their matches.
Can Makoa’s anchor go through shields?
No. An enemy shield blocks Dredge Anchor, ends the throw and starts its full 14-second cooldown, and the anchor cannot pull through walls. It does pass through Androxus’s Reversal and Terminus’s Power Siphon, but not Zhin’s Counter — and against Yagorath it stuns without pulling.
