Koga Guide: Two Stances, One Stamina Bar
Koga, The Lost Hand, is the most mechanically distinct flank in Paladins: two weapon stances, a three-bar Stamina resource that fuels every ability, and a wall climb nobody else has. He is also the #5 most played champion in the game — proof that complexity sells when it feels this good.
The 7.6 rework (October 2024) rebuilt his engine: the old Adrenaline Junkie talent was deleted and its signature mechanic — SMG damage generating Stamina — became baseline for everyone. Stance switching got twice as fast, the claws got pierce falloff, and a new default talent, Bullet Time, took the vacant slot. Guides written before the rework describe a different resource loop.
All numbers below are final-patch, verified against the wiki changelog, with loadouts taken from recorded ranked matches. Pick a talent to see its build — the statistical answer may surprise you: it is not the popular one.
Two weapons in one champion: hitscan SMGs (~1267 DPS, 70 ammo, 75 units) that feed your Stamina, or piercing fire slashes in Dragon Stance — 650 damage, no ammo, no falloff, but 30% weaker per target pierced since the 7.6 rework.
In SMG stance: a 1-bar ethereal dash that cleanses every status effect. In Dragon Stance: Skewer — a 70-unit slash-dash for 700 that damages straight through shields, Reversal, and Counter, at the price of all remaining Stamina.
The stance switch: claws out for 20 Stamina plus 20 per second. The 7.6 rework doubled the swap speed (0.22s in, 0.44s out) — weaving stances mid-fight is now the intended playstyle.
A Stamina-fueled sprint that works in both stances and does not break while firing. Combined with Wall Climb, it opens rooftop routes no other flank can path.
Become an ethereal blender: 3000 total damage in 25 units, straight through shields, with CC immunity and a full cleanse. The catch: a 1.1s stationary wind-up and a 0.5s lockout after — cast it from cover, not mid-open.
Dragon Stance burns health instead of Stamina — 200 HP per second, needs 300+ HP to enter, auto-exits at 15. The statistical leader at 52.7% winrate: your entire Stamina pool stays free for dashes and Agility while the claws stay out.
The best-winrate Koga loadout in recorded ranked matches (49.9% on PaladinsGuru): speed and sustain that offset the health the stance burns.
- Claws against grouped enemies, SMGs against singles — the pierce falloff decides, not preference.
- Health is your stance fuel: track it like a second resource bar and exit before Life Rip cannot keep up.
- Full Stamina means three escapes — you can play deeper than any other build in his kit.
- Skewer through the shield line to finish what the claws started; it costs Stamina you now barely use elsewhere.
Cyclone Strike deals 125% of each victim’s maximum health over its duration, and you move 25% faster during it. Any tank standing in it dies — though the ticks are damage, not an execute, so damage reduction and immunes still answer it.
The most-played Koga loadout in ranked data: a Stamina economy that keeps all three bars cycling between escape, stance, and the next ult setup.
- Your ultimate deletes the 4500 HP front liner your team has shot at for three minutes — save it for tanks, never flanks.
- Cast from behind cover: the 1.1s stationary wind-up is the most punishable moment in his kit.
- The +25% move speed during the ult lets you chase — start on the tank, walk it through the backline.
- Between ults you are a standard SMG Koga: farm Stamina with sustained fire and stay alive.
Shadow Step supercharges you: +15% fire rate and movement speed for 2s after every dash. The new default talent introduced by the 7.6 rework — no reliable stats exist for it yet, but the design is a hit-and-run duelist loop.
The second most-played ranked loadout: raw survivability and speed for the skirmish loop the talent rewards.
- Dash into the fight, not out of it — the 2s buff window is your damage spike, so open with Shadow Step.
- The buffed SMG stream also refills Stamina faster (1 per 100 damage) — aggression literally pays for itself.
- Save the last Stamina bar for the exit dash: the talent tempts you to spend everything on entry.
- The learning talent: it teaches the dash-shoot-reposition rhythm the whole champion is built on.
Everything Koga does spends Stamina — bait two dashes and he is a 2000 HP target with no exit. Cripples are his nightmare, and the 1.1s stationary ult wind-up is a free kill window for any burst champion paying attention. See where Koga sits in our tier list →
Is Koga good in 2026?
A-tier in our community-consensus tier list — a strong pick that stops short of the S-tier trio. With Khan at #4 and Koga at #5 by pick rate, the top of the popularity chart is where the good champions live; the B/C comfort picks (Tyra, Viktor, Seris) sit above them only through sheer familiarity.
His ceiling is real — few champions convert mechanical skill into pressure this directly — but so is his floor: 2000 HP, a 75-unit effective range, and a kit where every mistake costs a resource bar. He rewards the player who counts Stamina like money.
How do you play against Koga?
Count his bars. Every dash, sprint, and stance costs Stamina — after two quick dashes he has one bar or none, and a Koga without Stamina is a 2000 HP champion with no escape. Bait the dashes, then commit.
Two harder answers: cripples (Inara above all — his hardest counter by community vote) switch off the entire kit at once, and his ultimate has a 1.1-second stationary wind-up — a stun or burst during the cast wastes 3000 damage of ult charge. If he still gets it off, walk away: Cyclone Strike only reaches 25 units.
FAQ
What is the best Koga talent?
Dragon Fangs, by the numbers — 52.7% winrate in ranked data. It makes Dragon Stance burn health instead of Stamina, freeing the entire resource pool for dashes and Agility. Blood Reaper is the tank-killer alternative, dealing 125% of max health with the ultimate.
How does Koga’s Stamina work?
Koga has 120 Stamina in three bars, regenerating 6 per second — plus 1 Stamina for every 100 damage his SMGs deal to health, a mechanic that became baseline in the 7.6 rework (October 2024). Dashes and Agility cost one bar each; Dragon Stance drains it continuously.
How do you counter Koga?
Cripples and Stamina baiting. Inara is his hardest counter by community vote — cripple disables his dashes, sprint, and wall climb at once. His ultimate also has a 1.1-second stationary wind-up that burst damage or a stun can interrupt.
