Viktor Guide: The Soldier Everyone Starts With

Viktor, The Lone Wolf, is Paladins’ soldier archetype — assault rifle, frag grenade, sprint, artillery strike. No passive, no resource system, no movement tech. He is the second most played champion in the game by our pick-rate analysis, and the first champion most players ever touched.

Everything below is verified against the final patch, with talent winrates pulled from PaladinsGuru ranked data. One detail almost every guide misses: Viktor was buffed in patch 8.1 (January 2025) — among the last balance changes in the game’s history. Cardio now grants 150% jump height and Shrapnel hits 150 harder; every video guide we could find predates both.

Pick a talent below for its loadout, items, and playstyle. The data has a surprise: the most popular talent is not the strongest one.

// ABILITY KIT
LMB
Assault Rifle140 dmg / 0.1s · headshot 210

A hitscan assault rifle with 30 ammo, fully effective to 100 units (1400 DPS). Classic spray behavior: accuracy bloom builds as you hold the trigger.

RMB
Iron SightsPerfect accuracy · −50% speed

Aim down sights to remove bloom entirely — every bullet lands exactly on the crosshair. The cost is half your movement speed: ADS when safe, hip-fire when pressured.

Q
Frag Grenadeup to 750 AoECD 8s

A cookable grenade: hold the button to shorten its 1.5s fuse. An uncooked throw gets side-stepped; a cooked one detonates in their face. Radius 30 units, slight self-damage and knockback.

F
Hustle+65% speed · no cooldown

A sprint, not an escape: forward only, weapon lowered, cancelled by any action. Use it to rotate between covers and reach the point first — never to run from a fight you already lost.

ULT
Barrage3× 1400 AoE

Guided artillery: target an enemy player and a shell lands on them 0.75s later, up to three times. Locks onto stealthed targets and detonates at the target’s altitude — flying champions are valid targets.

PASSIVENone — Viktor is the purest champion in Paladins: no passive, no resource, no gimmick. What you aim is what you get, which is exactly why he teaches the game better than anyone.
// TALENT BUILDS — PICK ONE

Frag Grenade explodes 40% wider and 150 harder — up to 900 area damage. The statistical leader at 49.0% winrate, and one of two Viktor talents buffed in patch 8.1 (January 2025), the last balance patch era of the game.

// LOADOUT
5Grenadier−5s Frag Grenade cooldown per enemy hit
3On The Move+24% movement speed for 2s after the grenade
3Guerrilla Warfare−0.6s grenade cooldown per second of Hustle
2Compensator−40% recoil while aiming
2Fire in the Hole+12 ammo per enemy hit with the grenade

The second most-played Viktor loadout in recorded ranked matches (2,400+ on PaladinsGuru) — and it outperforms the most-played one by five winrate points. Every card feeds the grenade cycle.

// ITEMS
CauterizeStandard anti-heal buy in every match
HavenInto hitscan mirrors — you trade at static positions
NimbleFaster repositioning between covers
Deft Hands30 ammo at 1400 DPS means you reload constantly
// HOW TO PLAY IT
  • A grenade that hits two enemies comes back almost instantly with Grenadier — cook, throw, repeat.
  • Cook the grenade behind cover, peek only to release: 900 damage removes half a flank’s health bar.
  • Aim it at the objective in overtime — the 40% wider radius makes the point uninhabitable.
  • Your rifle finishes what the grenade starts: nade first, spray second, never the reverse.
// MATCHUPS
▼ COUNTERED BY
Evie
EvieThe hardest counter by community vote — an ADS rifleman cannot track a blinking ice witch.
Koga
KogaDashes through the spray, wins the close-range DPS race, leaves before the grenade lands.
Maeve
MaevePounces the moment Iron Sights halves his movement speed.
▲ STRONG AGAINST
Drogoz
DrogozHis best matchup by a landslide — hitscan erases a slow flying target, and Barrage locks onto him mid-air.
Barik
BarikGrenades clear turrets, sustained hitscan chews the shield.
Torvald
TorvaldA slow, shield-reliant target for exactly the damage profile Viktor outputs.

Viktor’s weakness is structural: aiming halves his speed, sprinting lowers his weapon, and nothing in the kit disengages a diver. His defense is his team’s peel and his own crosshair — community matchup data (the largest vote samples of any champion we cover) says mobile flanks beat both. // COMMUNITY RESOURCES

Is Viktor good in 2026?

The honest answer from our community-consensus tier list: C-tier — “simple, honest, outscaled”. And yet he is the #2 most played champion in the game. Like Tyra at #1, Viktor proves that pick rate measures trust, not power.

What keeps him playable is reliability plus two late buffs: patch 8.1 gave Cardio vertical mobility and pushed Shrapnel to 900-damage grenades. He will not carry a ranked lobby against S-tier picks, but he never feels unfair to play — win or lose, it was your aim.

Is Viktor good for beginners?

He is the beginner champion — flagged ✦ in our tier list, and deliberately designed as the bridge from Call of Duty and Battlefield: ADS aiming, a cookable frag, a sprint key. If you have played any military shooter, you already know 80% of Viktor.

The remaining 20% is what he teaches: positioning at 100 units, cover discipline, and grenade timing. Start on Cardio — the sprint-heal forgives mistakes — and graduate to Shrapnel when your grenades start hitting two targets instead of zero.

What is the rarest Viktor skin?

Invitational 2017 — sold only inside the HRX Digital Loot Pack for a few weeks in January 2017, and ranked #2 in our Top 10 Rarest Skins. Veterans report never having seen it in a live match; the full story is here.

A tier below sits Legionnaire Viktor — a retired battle-pass reward that does appear in our catalog. The stock button below shows what is currently listed.

FAQ

What is the best Viktor talent?

By winrate, Shrapnel — 49.0% in ranked data, boosted by its patch 8.1 buff to 900-damage grenades. Cardio is the most picked at 53.2% and the best for learning, while Burst Mode is a niche long-range option for open maps.

How do you counter Viktor?

Dive him with mobile flanks — Evie, Koga, and Maeve are his hardest counters by community vote. Aiming halves his movement speed and sprinting lowers his weapon, so he has no answer to a committed close-range engage without teammate peel.

Is Viktor a hitscan champion?

Yes — his assault rifle is hitscan, dealing 140 damage per shot at 1400 DPS, fully effective to 100 units. Iron Sights removes all weapon bloom for perfect accuracy, making him one of the most reliable hitscan champions for new players.
